  • Hamelia cuprea or Bahama Firebush is a large growing tropical shrub that, despite the common name, is native to Cuba, Haiti, and the Cayman Islands, but not the Bahamas. It is frequently misrepresented as native to Florida. Bahama Firebush is easily distinguished from its native cousin, Hamelia patens. The flowers are larger, have a more open bell shape, and begin as bright yellow and transition to burnished orange.
  • Opinions on whether it is more, less, or equally attractive to hummingbirds and other wildlife vary widely, suggesting its usefulness for attracting pollinators may be location and species-specific. It makes a great background or screen planting, stand-alone accent, transition point, or can be grown as a large, outdoor garden pot.
  • Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Avoid pruning in winter when plants are dormant.
  • Indoor Growing: This semi-tropical plant grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10*F day/night differential, so not well suited for the average indoor growing space.
  • Climate: Hamelia patens is a semi-tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 8B, 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and does not consider other variables. Mature plants in 8B and 9A typically go fully dormant and resprout in Spring.
